The painting Trauma of Birth by Jindřich Štyrský was auctioned at Sotheby’s for a record amount.
Jindřich Štýrský’s 1936 oil painting Trauma of Birth is a surrealistic painting depicting minerals, bones, a human embryo and a bloody canvas. It is exceptional in its size (1×2.5 metres), its subject matter, but also probably its significance in the artist’s life. He kept the painting until his death and bequeathed it to his friend Toyen.
